Why Hyside?

The purchase of a boat is a big investment. We heartily encourage you to compare our product to any and all inflatables on the market. We're quite confident you'll find no equal in quality and value. To help you understand how Hyside stacks up against the competition, we think the philosophy on which our product has been built is the best place to begin.

Twenty-two years ago we began with the idea that the only way to make and sell the top product was to create a boat from the toughest performance oriented material available. We began to study the strengths and weaknesses of every comparable product on the market. The first distinction we noted was that between plastic (PVC) and rubber (Hypalon®) boats.

Wear and Tear

Our primary goal was to create a product that would please an Outfitter in terms of durability and performance. No small feat. The first thing we discovered was that outfitters faced two distinct types of fabric problems: One was Wear and the other was Tear.

Some companies had bottoms that were worn through after a year of use, but had no serious tears on the fleet. First we identified where the damage to the material originated. We found that "wear" was caused by the abrasive nature of river rock and/or transportation of the boat to and from the river.

In the past, some manufacturers attempted to solve "wear and tear" problems by installing an extra layer of material on the bottom of the boat (hence, the term "wrapped-floor"). Our direction was to improve the strength of the nylon base-fabric so it would not tear under normal Outfitter use (abuse!). Why have two layers with less combined strength than one? We contacted the manufacturer of bullet proof vest fabric to determine our needs. This is where our base fabric is manufactured today!

The "wear" problem is solved by coating the nylon-base fabric with a larger concentration of the best abrasion resistant material available: HYPALON® (from DuPont®).

DOUBLE DENIER EXPLAINED

Our raft material is specially made for Hyside by braiding 2 threads before weaving the fabric. So when we say 840 denier, you’re really getting the strength of 1680 denier. Likewise, a 1260 denier is actually 2520. The bottom line is that the denier of the thread isn’t as important as the tear strength of woven fabric... and ours is the strongest in the industry.
