However, this doesn't mean the coating is a sufficient concentration to handle the abuse of normal Outfitter usage. Both sides of our fabric are coated with a generous layer of 80% Hypalon®. This concentration leads the industry. Hypalon® has proved itself for decades and the big reason it is not used more is the cost. We couldn't offer you all the qualities that we do if we cut our production cost by substituting unproven material into our proven methods. Our boats are hand-constructed at the same location the fabric is made. Few manufacturers can say that their product goes from raw material to a finished product in the box at the same location. Most boat builders are faced with accepting stock materials that were never intended for the sole purpose of rigorous whitewater use. Plastic vs. Rubber The first and most important choice to make when selecting an inflatable... Plastic (PVC) had been introduced as an inexpensive substitute for rubber material . The most evident problem with plastic was its inability to hold air over time. By nature, plastic bleeds air out of the fabric and it becomes necessary to constantly "top-off' the air chambers. We never found this to even be a factor when examining rubber coated materials such as Hypalon®. Hyside Cataraft RAF-156CAT  We closely studied the effects of impacts upon the seam where the material is joined throughout the construction of the boat. We found that rubber "rebounds" with impact and plastic "jars." The "jarring" effect from cumulative impacts upon plastic material caused the joints to break down over time. Hypalon® "rebounded" repeatedly with no effect upon seam strength. It is also important to note how each type of material is joined together at the seam. The joints of plastic boats are welded. This saves time from a production standpoint; however, if you're stuck in the field it's no simple task to repair. Sure, the manufacturer will say "send it back and we'll fix it free," but how much vacation time do you have? Hypalon® is hand-glued. Seams are strong and stay strong. The patterns and the process of building water craft from rubber allows for performance shapes that stiff plastic can't duplicate. Additionally, the stiff nature of plastic creates sharp edges (especially in cool weather) that appear when folding. These edges form points that abrade fast. They are especially susceptible during transportation of your raft when off the river. Our choice? Obviously Hypalon®!
